Legacy Beyond Time: Honoring the Patriarch and Matriarch of Isiwo Land
Transitions are a natural part of the human journey, but certain lives leave an imprint so profound that their “sunset” feels more like a lasting dawn. This past weekend, I had the distinct honor of attending the Memorial Mass and Final Burial of two remarkable souls: Prince John Adekokumo Ogunnaike (The Asiwaju of Isiwo Land) and Princess Bibiana Kehinde Ogunnaike (Yeye Asiwaju of Isiwo Land).
Gathered at the Holy Spirit Catholic Parish in Ijebu Isiwo, Ogun State, we didn’t just witness a funeral; we celebrated a dual legacy of service, faith, and community leadership.
The Weight of a Name
In our culture, titles are not merely ornaments—they are responsibilities. As the Asiwaju and Yeye Asiwaju of Isiwo Land, Prince John and Princess Bibiana were more than just figures of royalty; they were the pillars upon which the aspirations of their people rested.
Prince John, a distinguished Fellow (FCA, FCCA, ACIS), blended the precision of a professional with the heart of a traditional leader. Alongside him, Princess Bibiana embodied the grace and strength that hold families and communities together. Seeing them honored together serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in partnership and the impact of a unified vision.
Lessons for the Living
Reflecting on their journey, three things stood out to me that we should all carry forward in our own lives and careers:
Integrity is the Best Currency: Long after the professional accolades fade, it is your character that people remember. Prince John’s reputation in the financial and traditional sectors remains untarnished.
Rootedness: No matter how high we climb, we must never forget our “Isiwo.” Our home, our community, and our heritage are what ground us and give our success meaning.
The Power of Faith: The atmosphere at Holy Spirit Catholic Parish was one of hope. It reminded us that a life lived in service to God and humanity is a life that never truly ends.
